Surah Al Ahqaf

The 46th chapter of the Quran is Surah Al-Ahqaf, a beautiful message revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Makkah. Picture a vast desert landscape where you can see wind-shaped sand dunes stretched out for miles. The inspiration behind the name of the Surah, Al-Ahqaf or “The Sand Dunes” and “The Curved Sandhills.”

Though short with only 35 verses, it packs quite a punch. It’s like Allah (SWT) talking to human beings with reminders, warnings and narratives that can help us walk on the straight path.

It could be divided into three sections as follows:

Allâh’s Signs of Power: The Surah opens by pointing out various miracles of creation ranging from the spaciousness of skies and interconnection between all aspects of human body which serve as evidence for someone to believe in such phenomena.

Stories about incidents in ancient times: After this, the Surah examines instances in which previous communities rejected Allah’s (SWT) revelation and were consequently punished. The story of Hud AS and Ad people forms its central theme. Ad was a strong nation that was rich enough but it became too arrogant to acknowledge one God only Allah SWT. A grievous tempest happened to them at last resulting into their destruction as an example against future generations.

This negative note does not end this Surah though; rather it concludes on a note full of optimism and encouragement meant for believers. It lays emphasis on good actions, thankfulness as well as righteousness.
